Doctor Gerard Furlong is an anaesthetist who has been practicing for the best part of 20 years. He has enjoyed a rewarding and fulfilling career both practicing and teaching anaesthesia. His first posting after graduating from St Bartholomew's college was at Dunganon Hospital in Northern Ireland where he worked on the Trauma ward and also in the A&E department. He has been a valued member of staff of several other hospitals including Coventry and Warwick hospital where he worked on the obstetrics ward as well as lecturing junior anaesthetists.
Gerard Furlong has spent time working within several different disciplines over the course of his career. After spending time working in the ICU and on the Trauma ward he came to realise that his true calling was obstetrics. He spent many years working on the obstetrics ward at Coventry and Warwick hospital playing a vital role in the safe delivery of thousands of children and even having one or two named after him.
The anaesthetist Gerard Furlong is a long standing member of several leading professional societies. He is a regular contributor of articles to journals and has lent his expert knowledge to a number of research projects that have developed new techniques and procedures in the field of anaesthesia. Presently he is a member of ICS (Intensive care Society) and DAS (Difficult Airways Society) whose goal is to improve patient safety by better management of patient's airways when under anaesthetic. He is also a member of SCATA (Society for Computers And Technology in Anaesthesia) where he has been recently collaborating on a project with Drs Martin Hurrell and Senthil Kumaran to create an implementation guide for a new HL7 CDA anaesthesia log.
Away from the world of medicine Ged Furlong tries to relax by
playing cards although he is not always successful. His other
interests include sailing, skiing and going for long walks with
his two golden Labradors.
